It was only a matter of time before Domonic Brown and his .327/20/68 line in 93 games in mostly AA and a little AAA would be called up. The surprising part of it all is that Brown was brought up on Wednesday not to replace Jayson Werth, but to fill in for Shane Victorino who heads to the disabled list with an abdominal strain. Werth of course has been dangled by the Phillies in their attempt to add a starter. Brown wasted no time proving that his skills can translate to the Majors going 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. It might not happen just yet, but eventually fantasy owners are going to be comparing this guy to Matt Kemp and Carlos Beltran. The tools have that much promise.

Citizens Bank Park is a place that helped make MVPs out of Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard. It also has made Chase Utley into the most feared second baseman at the plate of the last decade. All of them have a better OPS at home than on the road and all of them benefit from the short porch in right field. Like those guys (Rollins is a switch hitter), Brown is a lefty and will benefit from the lineup support and ballpark immediately. Despite coming into the year with a target on his back among Phillies fans for being the guy that the Phillies refused to part with last season in the Cliff Lee trade and this season in the Roy Halladay trade, he has not taken a step back on the field. He is having his best season by the numbers and his appearance in the All-Star Future’s Game backed that up. Brown came into the season as the number fourteen prospect in the game according to MLB.com. Everyone with the exception of Desmond Jennings has already been up with to the Majors, so Brown was essentially the best talent still in the minors.
Should he be added today? Possibly. Given the results that Mike Stanton and Pedro Alvarez have had thus far, owners can be understandably skeptical, but I’m always looking for a potential star when I add someone new rather than a temporary fix. I guess the biggest question is do the Phillies believe Brown is a star or will he be pushed aside when Victorino returns?
  • Jason Heyward’s legend is reaching Henry “The Jet” Rodriguez style after he stole home yesterday. Heyward has hit safely in 10 of 11 games and had a streak of six straight multi-hit games broken up on Tuesday. Between him, Stephen Strasburg (he could start Sunday), Buster Posey, and maybe Brown now it appears that the NL has as good a group of rookies as the game has seen in some time.
  • Logan Morrison (last note on NL rookies – I swear) had his first multi-hit game. Another borderline add for teams looking for a lot of production out of nowhere.
  • Craig Breslow got the save for Oakland after Michael Wuertz entered the ninth and could only get one out while facing three batters.
  • Joel Pineiro will be out six to eight weeks with an oblique injury. Of course eight weeks from now will be September 23rd, so if the Angels are still 8.5 back at that time this injury could just end Pineiro’s season.
  • The Angels, White Sox, and Rangers are all interested in acquiring Prince Fielder. It makes sense that AL teams would be most interested given his inevitable future as a designated hitter. The Brewers will likely want more than the Mariners got for Cliff Lee since Fielder has another year on his contract at a relatively cheap rate.
  • Perhaps the Mariners would not have traded Lee in the first place if Adrian Beltre were still there and he was having the year he’s having in Boston. Beltre hit home run number seventeen yesterday as he has now more than doubled his output in his last season with Seattle.
  • It’s rare to give fantasy time to middle relievers, but Joaquin Benoit deserves a shout out. He has 51 strikeouts to 6 walks this year. Tampa has done a great job developing players, but this week they also deserve credit for finding players who are robots (Benoit) and trading for the guys that throw all of their franchises no hitters (Matt Garza).
  • Ross Ohlendorf got a scare in the first inning of the Rockies game as he was hit by a line drive in the first inning. He was taken to the hospital, but eventually brought back to Coors Field.
  • Beltran hit his first home run in more than ten months.
  • J.D. Drew has a mild hamstring strain. He was not in today’s lineup and is not going on the DL just yet. If he does go to the DL, Jacoby Ellsbury would be my bet as the guy who takes his place.

Bailey will be back soon. Don't pick up Breslow. Check out http://www.thefantasybaseballguru.com leave comments ask qs and tell me what you think.

  2. Dave says:

Outstanding reference to Sandlot. But was it Henry "The Jet" Rodriguez or Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez? For some reason I remember it as Benny. Either way outstanding.

  3. Schruender says:

You are correct. Thank you. I'm thinking Henry Rodriguez from the Cubs…

  4. Dave says:

It still leaves the question of how a pinch runner could garner such an incredible reputation and nickname. If Joey Gathright never received a nickname for jumping cars and American League pitchers, then I find it hard to believe Benny would get one too.

Then again, it just occurred to me for the first time that it's a play on Elton John's famous song. Wow. I just did get the pun.

  5. Schruender says:

Wow I never realized that either. PG movies can run pretty deep.
