There is an old story about a Braves middle infielder who had a down season at age 27. He moved into the league’s best power hitting park and in one months time with his new club became a top 15 fantasy baseball player. That was the story of course of Kelly Johnson who has tailed off quite a bit since that time, but he’s still having a great season in a year where not many middle infielders have showed up to work.

Now Yunel Escobar has been moved by the Braves brass. Like Johnson he was having an awful season and has not hit a single home run after hitting 14 last season. He does have 12 doubles which isn’t great either, but shows that he shouldn’t be stuck at 0 dingers. Obviously there’s room to grow, and perhaps that room is in Escobar being questioned by essentially all of Atlanta for his lack of effort. Again similar to Johnson, Escobar is moving into a better home run park although not on the same scale as Johnson according to ESPN Park Factors. There is also still time for him to figure it out at his age.
Short term, obviously he’s not someone to buy until the results happen on the field, but for next season he is definitely a bounce back candidate. This was a terrific trade for both teams, but Toronto was the bigger winner.
  • Welcome to the show Carlos Beltran. Ok it wasn’t his first trip, but it’s been a while. Ike Davis was removed from a role that should not have been his for the last month as he slid down from the clean up spot to make room for Beltran. Interesting to note that Beltran and Jerry Manuel weren’t shy of testing a knee as he attempted a steal upon reaching first right away.
  • Gordon Beckham homered yesterday for the White Sox. He is now 6 for his last 10 with 2 home runs and a double. With his potential and how good he played as a rookie, he’s a must add right now.
  • Albert Pujols probably had the worst .308/38 HR/116 RBI/100 runs first half pace in the history of fantasy because of the unreal expectations he has. Three hits in five at-bats yesterday was a healthy start to doing better than those numbers.
  • Look for Vladimir Guerrero and Josh Hamilton to slow down in the second half. Ignore yesterday’s three hit performances. Then again the same could have been said about Guerrero at the end of every month this season, and he keeps getting better.
  • Torii Hunter is mentally exhausted after the all-star break.
  • Despite a .231 batting average the Marlins might move Mike Stanton up in the batting order to 6th. Stanton has been much better lately.
  • The Giants signed Dontrelle Willis. The Dodgers are not expected to stay pat while their rivals add to their pitching staff. They have placed calls to the Mets about Oliver Perez’s availability. Omar Minaya probably won’t move him unless he can also send a top rated prospect like Jenrry Mejia with Perez. I was actually serious about the first part. The D-Train has more lives than a cat.

"Omar Minaya probably won't move him unless he can also send a top rated prospect like Jenrry Mejia with Perez."

    That is a weird sentence.

I do not understand why the Mets would want to ship a prospect along with Perez. If a team really wants Perez, then the Mets should make that deal even if it is only for a bag of balls.

Sorry I was being sarcastic. "I was actualy serious about the first part." That means the only thing true about that was the D-Train signing with the Giants. I'm just saying that the Dodgers will get an equally terrible pitcher to match the Giants. And also slapping a jab at Omar Minaya. I'm pretty sure he would do almost anything to get rid of Oliver's contract.

None of the Dodgers looking at Oliver Perez is true. Safe to say no one will try to add Oliver unless he's released.
