Opening Day is hardly over. And already, there were three bullpens with huge issues on Opening Day. The first was a pen that had very obvious issues coming into the season.

The Los Angeles Angels brought in Fernando Rodney with a two run lead in the 9th inning. He gave up a walk and a hit and a very long foul ball with those two runners on base before ultimately closing the game. The odds on him being the closer for the Angels in two months should be under fifty percent. The only reason he’ll remain closer is if nobody else on the team emerges. Jordan Walden has the power stuff to do it, but he doesn’t have much experience in that role.

The Brewers called on John Axford. Axford was wonderful last season, but there are questions about how sustainable his run as closer could be. Last year was his first full season in the Majors at age 27. Still, one poor outing is probably a little early to rush to judgment. This can go under the category of put it on your radar.

Then there is Ryan Franklin. He gave up the game-tying home run to Cameron Maybin in his inning of work for the Cardinals. Franklin had said last year that this season would be his last. He has since retracted that statement, but the fact that he would contemplate retirement tells a story. He’s 38 this season and last year he had a K/9 under 6. Now Franklin does have a 1.00 WHIP after one outing and has experience bouncing back from blown saves. He’s in the same category as Axford, and I’d be surprised if he keeps the closer job for 162 games between injuries and performance.

2 Responses to Closers Looking Shaky Already

  1. Brablc says:

Not to be an Axford apologist but we probably wouldn’t be talking about him without McGahee’s bonehead defensive no-out fielder’s choice. Which would have been the 3rd out and the win for the Brewers.

    He did look shaky, however.

Broxton also gave up a run, but got the save.

I’m in a keeper league, where you keep 4. Someone kept Franklin. Thanks!

The Brewer bullpen looks like it could really hold them back this year. That and their defense. They look like a great “on-paper” team that will underperform. Even with a good 1B
